Each image consists of thousands of pixels of different colors. Based on the RGB values of the individual pixels a 3D color model is created which represents the image in the three-dimensional RGB color space. Then the model can be deformed and edited in virtual reality whereby the colors of the image changes in real time.

THE IDEA BEHIND

Thanks to virtual reality, it is now possible to break out of the digital two-dimensionality of the screen. It enables us to have a completely new experience with 3D representations, which opens up countless new possibilities. 

Digital colors are always composed of three components: Red, Green and Blue (RGB). Therefore, each color can be located in a three-dimensional coordinate system. So most modern color systems are three-dimensional.

The COLOR3D VR application takes all colors of a picture and places them in a 3D coordinate system, creating a 3D color model of the picture. This color model can then be deformed in the 3D space by physically grasping it with the controllers. This way one is also changing the colors of the picture. It is a tool for changing and correcting colors in Virtual Reality.  

COLOR3D is an experiment that combines the three-dimensionality of colors with the new possibilities of 3D representation in VR in order to gain a new understanding of colors and color spaces and, above all, a new control over colors. For the very first time, all three components of RGB colors can be influenced all at once, since one is not limited by the two-dimensionality of a screen. 

I think that the three-dimensional representation of colors and color spaces will have a strong influence in the future, especially through new possibilities like virtual reality, in the handling of digital colors, both in video and image editing, as well as in color composition and color science.
